Hello everybody! Check out my cover of Colorful by The Verve Pipe (Rockstar version). Enjoy :)

Greetings again, friends!

Here’s a video of myself playing the solo from The Best of Times by Dream Theater, from their latest album, Black Clouds & Silver Linings. This video is quite old as I recorded it a couple weeks after the album came out, and goes back to last July. The minute I heard the solo on the song, I fell in love with it, this is hands-down one of Petrucci’s greatest guitar solos of all-time, and being on the progressive metal band’s 10th studio record, that’s saying a lot: The solo combines not-so-easy guitar techniques and simultaneously, a heavenly melody that perfectly suits the song’s mood (go here for more info about the song). Anyhoo, this cover as I said goes back to summer of 2009, and I had then the intention of posting it but apparently forgot to and got caught up with other stuff. Note that this is recorded by a phone camera with a basic distortion of a small Marshall amp. Enjoy!

While going through random YouTube videos, I stumbled upon a couple awesome videos (both music-related) definitely worth checking out, especially if you’re a fan of unusual yet genius musical works. So, enjoy!

Additionally, here’s another similar video of an equally awesome “Orchestra”… Enjoy

So many versions of Jimi Hendrix’ Little Wing have been made by various bands and artists. While going over some random YouTube music videos, I stumbled upon this awesome acoustic guitar tapping cover by Carlos Vamos. It’s really awesome, check it out!

Welcome to Guitar Discipline. This is the first guitar lesson of many that will figure on UsefZ, where Ziad (who happens to be my brother, and one of the best guitarists I’ve ever met) will go through several guitar exercises, techniques and much more, ranging from the first ‘preparatory’ year lessons to considerably advanced ones, explaining each step carefully along the way.

The veteran Progressive Metal band, Dream Theater, had set the date for the release of their new highly anticipated album, “Black Clouds & Silver Linings” which is due June 23rd. The band let us in for a sneak peek to the six-piece-record’s new material by releasing a single entitled “A Rite Of Passage” whose video clip will also be published soon.

Well, as a first impression, I guess what I can say is this is classic Dream Theater. Classic intro, very catchy main guitar riff, a melodic verse and chorus, and, of course, the undead, really technical break that would start a totally new beat and make way for a mad guitar-keyboard duel. Petrucci and Rudess never cease to amaze us with their awesome guitar solos, what’s even better is that they often turn the solos into a technique competition, and of course, succeed each time to set a higher bar. But still, I feel a little disappointed, I mean, the tune’s really great, but it’s like Dream Theater are recycling some old ideas of theirs. The whole thing’s so formulatic, and plus, it seems that they don’t make an effort to make the solo even fit in the song anymore. One might say “Yes that’s why they’re labeled Progressive” but I don’t believe that’s an excuse. In previous albums such as ‘Change of Seasons’ and ‘Scenes from a memory’, the verses, choruses and solos sounded so varied and different, yet still so relevant to each other.

Still, I think it’s real good nevertheless. Maybe the song didn’t grow in me yet. But for now, I’m really looking forward to the rest of the songs in the new record. Note that as I write this, I’m listening to the song over and over again, noticing some really cool stuff  they put into there. Oh well, I guess I’d leave it up for you to listen and judge now.

*Update*: I just found another song released from the new album, so I thought I’d update this post and share the new one entitled A Nightmare To Remember, the first track on the new DT album.

Part I:

Part II:

First-listen-notes:

- What’s up with the dominant darkness in DT’s new record.

- How the hell are they planning to perform this live?

- Do I smell blast beats at 3:56 on the second part of the song? O_O

As weird and uncommon as the name sounds, ‘Ba3′ is the name of my instrumental music piece that I started composing during summer, and recorded its demo two or three months ago. Why ‘ba3′? Well, when I wrote the piece’s first line, I saved it as ‘ba3′, the first name that came to my mind, and, since then, I never thought or bothered to change the name.

Now, the recording is of bad quality, since I recorded the song at home, with my humble recording tools, consisting mainly of a built-in sound card and a primitive mic, plus, the last part lacks a short solo that I didn’t record back then. Anyhow, here’s the recorded Ba3:
